E. climacophora, especially those from the colder Kunasir Island, are "boom/bust" feeders. They will feed like crazy (I had a female who would eat 2 mice 3 times/week) for 6-7 mos and then fast for the rest of the year. Males actually go off feed more often than females and stay off food for longer periods. You can brumate climacophora safely into the 40's but I usually brumated them in the 50s to be safer. A yearling could safely be cooled to about 58-60 which would slow the metabolism enough to prevent weight loss but have less risk of respiratory disease and other problems than going into the 40s. As an aside, I have had climacophora go off feed for long periods and not lose much weight at all (I suggest you monitor it). Also 5 weeks off feed is not much for a climacophora unless he is losing weight precipitously.
Feel free to email me if you want more info.
:My Japanese rat hasn’t eaten for 5 weeks and he is around a year old so I decided to take him to the vet. The vet had no experience with Elaphe climacophora yet he suggested putting him into hibernation. The way to do this was (this is what he said):
:1. turn off heat mat
:2. few days later move him into a colder room
:3. colder room, etc. for 2 weeks
:4. then put him in the fridge! For a week and a half.
:Firstly does anyone think this is right, and also does any one have any personal experience with these snakes could you give me any general advice on this and general keeping.
:Thanks,
:Eliot
