I should probably defer to some of our more expert forum friends but I'll answer you anyway. There is no such thing as an absolute line beyond which you can't find a subspecies or color variant. Your area is apparently close to the generally accepted range and it certainly sounds like you found a Black Rat to me. By the way, if you bring it up to your teacher, be sure to be very polite. As an aside, I've also been told that you can't find Gopher Tortoises above the fall line but I found one right along main street in my little Alabama town that is ABOVE the fall line. Are you keeping the snake or did you relese him?
