I know a guy who had one Cal king egg that didn't hatch for 10 days after the rest of the clutch, at which time he cut it open to find a perfect baby that had shed in the egg. The baby was fine. For some reason it couldn't break through the shell originally, and after the baby sheds the egg tooth there is little chance of getting out.
As for the stillborn pattern.. could it be that the pattern wasn't fully developed when the baby died, or is it the real thing? Striping is no stranger to ratsnakes. Makes one wonder.
