Musking is when they release an oily chemical that smells like a mix between garlic and dog feces.. This burns if you get it in any cuts, or your eyes, and tastes bad. It's doing about the same thing a toad does when you pick them up- trying to scare you off. It's a reflex to escape predators.. Think about it, you're a dog, you jump on this snake, it squirts this stuff all over your face, stinging your eyes and making you want to scrub your tongue with sand paper. what would you do? Eat it, or run away? Lol. And he's right, it probably was a black rat, and probably entirely harmless. They can bite, and it can hurt a little, but not bad enough to need stitches or anything(maybe a band-aid), and they're non-venemous.
