I finally got to see a bug-eyed leucistic TX ratsnake - actually a couple of them - at Daytona! They don't look all that hideous to me, certainly not any more so than pug dogs or all those strains of fancy goldfish. But they're not for me.
Just for fun, I actually picked up one obviously affected snake and held it up to the vendor, asking him if he had "any bug-eyed snakes of this type". He gave me a frown and a negative/neutral response, but I persisted, saying "that's too bad... I hear they're getting pretty good money for those 'bug-eyes' right now... you sure you don't have any?" He mumbled a bit but didn't quite acknowledge ever having heard of them. I'm pretty sure he took me as sincere, though I thought forum regular Justin Becraft, who was standing beside me during my conversation with the vendor, was going to bite a hole through his own cheek to keep from laughing. Anyway, if you hear that the price on 'bug-eyes' has suddenly spiked, blame me...
Sorry we didn't really get a chance to talk, Dwight, but it was nice meeting you in Daytona. Did you go hunting on the way home?
Gerry
