Hi Janet Lee. I certainly don't claim to be an expert, but am willing to share my herp experience with you. My sub adult and adult snakes are provided with at least a 20 gallon LONG tank (provides more floor space). I think a three footer like yours would probably need a 20 gallon long tank (if not now then in the near future, as yellows get around 7 feet long or so).
As for something for climbing, a twenty gallon long tank will permit you to place small branches and the like for elevation/climbing. Of course, if you can find a tall tank that also provides adequate floor space, all the better. Perhaps more important than climbing opportunities are hiding areas. My ratsnakes love to hide, at least 75% of the time. Hope this helps. Enjoy your yellow rat, they are beautiful animals!
: Spent some time looking over posts, enjoyed pictures tremendously. Am getting 3 ft yellow rat this week and was going to keep him in 10 gal. quarantine tank, but since they are semi-arboreal do I need a taller cage? Do they lose the arboreal tendency as they grow? I have corns, but am new to other rats.
