Yellow rat caging question

Spent some time looking over posts, enjoyed pictures tremendously. Am getting 3 ft yellow rat this week and was going to keep him in 10 gal. quarantine tank, but since they are semi-arboreal do I need a taller cage? Do they lose the arboreal tendency as they grow? I have corns, but am new to other rats.
