: Hi! I live outside San Antonio, Tx. I found what I believe to be a rat snake in my back yard. He's about 4 foot long and is mostly black with kind of a checkard patern on his back. He has orange around the markings on him. He doesn't really look like the normal "Texas Rats" you see around here. What could he be?

If you are certain at all that he is a rat, and then even more a texas rat @ that, you have found the sweet looking Orange Phase Texas Rat. They have orange between the scales, especially more towards the head, and a slightly lighter pattern (At least I think).
I have a yearling, and the looks pretty sweet. If Dwight Good still had his page up you could see a pic, but check the ratsnake board or type in Orange Texas on a search and feast your eyes
f.y.i. - There is also a "Yellow Phase", and I think something else, perhaps red.
