I have a black ratsnake who is 11 years old. We aquired him from a couple who kept him in a large (110 gallon equivalent) wood and plexiglass cage with a hot rock as the only source of heat. As you may have read, hot rocks don't heat the air and are way too small to heat a 6 foot snake significantly. He is large, healthy and never misses a meal. For now we've kept the same set-up because our room is pretty warm (75) and I figure the old guy is used to it.
