In some of the blacker and more montane populations, blackrats can have bold checkering on their anterior ventrals giving way to solid black posteriorly. Also I would have to say a good percentage of the hatctling black rats I've seen (I've seen many) had striping under their tails. Alot of the lindhiemeri in my area also have strong spearpoint markings on their heads as hatchlings. There is alot more variation in herps than what most text books will tell you.
