Nowhere in my post did I say that inbreeding depression does not exist in reptiles only that it has not been demonstrated yet and to blindly say reptiles are like other species (mammals or fruitflies) where inbreeding has been shown to be detrimental is as of yet unsupported. In fact I give several examples that would suggest (not prove) that inbreeding depression does not exist in many reptile species. While I have used Ross and Marsec's book as a reference in several publications it was only because it is the only text out there on boid reproduction. In fact, I and many people I have spoken with believe that much of the husbandry and especially the genetic information provided is poor at best. There comment that breeding snakes at 2 years of age increases inbreeding because it shortens the generation time is laughable. I would be glad to read any primary reference regarding inbreeding in snakes that you could provide. Yes there are a lot of well respected authorities that have condemned inbreeding in reptiles, but are these opinions supported by research. Like I said before, I do not support it when outbreeding is possible. Personally, I think nurturing the runt of the litter so that it does not die to be more detrimental to a reptile population than occasional inbreeding because it retains obviously bad genes. : Wow,Rick, I don't even know exactly where to start. While you certainly made some interesting points,ie;in reference to isolated island populations of distinct species, and, subspecies of reptiles, your assertion that inbreeding depression is not a real problem with reptiles, could not be further from the truth, while my initial post was only aimed at clearing up a percieved misconception in regards to definition, the "blanket" statements you made in your reply, are so completely erroneous, that,I wonder just where you arrived at such an opinion!? although I certainly don't claim to be an expert, nor,do I have any formal training,my obsession with animals, has led to some extensive reading, and, rather than trying to offer alot of quotes from qualified sources,I recommend that anyone reading this, that share Rick's views,to start with,"The Reproductive Husbandry of Pythons and Boas"by Ross & Marzec,in particular,"chapter 6: Genetics of Boid Reproduction". though we've learned alot in the nine years, since it's publication, the basics, are still quite rock solid.
