If you are not planning on cropping at all then technically it is better to take the pic at the resolution you intend to use.

So if you want a 640*480 picture to post online, if you take a 1600*1200 picture and reduce its size, the computer will try and figure out which pixels to remove and average pixels next to it to try to keep the image smooth.

If you just take the pic at 640*480, what you record will be what you get onscreen with no computer averaging.
