Joel Fish-- I had this EXACT same thing happen to me with Western Painted Turtles when I was a beginning turtle enthusiast. The most likely culprit is feeding him food that's too high in protein content. This won't kill the turtle but the shell will never be completely right again, and the severity of deformation depends on how long you let it go. What has he been eating for the past year? --Maxx
