My larger female Cynops pyyrhogaster is five inches long, Motz (a male) is 4.5. So Fire bellies that size are not uncommon. There are two common types of Cynops (fire belly newts), Pyyrhogaster (japanese, rarer) and orientalis. The more common one is orientalis of coarse.
But with the fact that the newt Iggy is describing attacked another smaller newt I'd guess Paramesotriton. The best way to identify it is to post a pic of one of your beautiful paras here, jon.
