Thank you all so much for the advice, Since I have read several posts before I posted mine I have beeen to Caduate Central. Now I KNOW 1 Gallon seems small, however, I will get you a pic of the tank and him sometime tonight(my friend is letting me use his Dig. camera). He is rather small, about 2 1/2 to 3 inches, and probably a male. it looks like his coclea is large, but that could be just an illusion from it bieng up next to the side of the tank. I am an almost 2 year owner of fish so I DO understand the importance of water quality. Before I even put the newt in the tank I treated the water with Amquel and then a few drops of Cycle to get things going. The tank origionally had a guppy and pygmy catfish in it but infortunatly the guppy died =(. I put the catfish in another tank (my mom's 5 1/2) I made sure to clean everything very well and used new rinsed gravel.I have Ammonia, Nitrate, Nitrite, and Ph test kits which I will use to monitor the quality of my water.
The tank is a rather good setup for a 1-gallon, I think. It has an artificial plant, deep swimming area and adequate land area.
One thing I am also worried about is the temp. My two 15 gallons tanks are about 78º-74º which is great for the fish but I know its not good for my newt. I live in Tampa, Fl. so basements are not an option, we do have AC which should keep the temp. below 80º but do you have any suggestions on keeping him cool? The pet store told me he loves misting. He seems to like it, I fill the bottle with cool DISTILLED water.
I will be posting a follow up tonight letting you know his status, and hope fully a few pics. He seems fine, He's hanging out on top of the artificial plant and has been there all night (its 6 in the morning here).
Thanks again,
-Newtbie
