They sound like N. Watersnakes to me. If they dive into the water when disturbed, that's what they are. I'd reccomned investing in a good field guide for herps in your area.
F.Y.I. New York has 3 species of venomous snakes: Timber Rattlesnake, Massasaugas, and Copperheads. Cottonmouths' northernmost limit to their range is SE VA.
