As a general rule, blotch count in the Northern (N. sipedon sipedon) increases as you move away from the range of the Midland Watersnake (N. s. pleuralis) which occupies the SE and lower Mississippi River valley. The books make the distinction between the subspecies at 30 dorsal blotches.
The highest blotch counts I've seen in Northerns has been from the West and South sides of the Great Lakes. I'd like to see some Canada and New England sipedon for comparison.
Here's a juvenile Midland from SC for comparison.
