Question about ackies

would it be okay to just put a lay box in the cage with ackies? I cant see putting like 12" of soil in a like 4x2x2 cage that would be so heavy, for some reason I cant find cypress mulch here in NJ when I use to get it some yrs ago. Im still trying to figure what type of cage I can build that would provide for deep substrate, I asked people to post pics of their ackie cage(those that dont use troughs)and only got one respond with a pic. Thanks in advance for your help
