If you are not able to give your leopard gecko enough attention to be observant of his activities, maybe you need to have a pet rock.
That's just plain good husbandry. Just as you can't all female leopard geckos get along with other females, the same is true with most generalized statements.
I prefer sand substrates because they are more natural than paper towels or fake grass carpets so it won't stress them out as much as other un-natural substrates might do.
