Your methods are good too: they get the job done and that's the point, isn't it! I raised exotic birds for 20 years and had a couple of conclusions I tried to share with others:
1) Don't believe EVERYTHING anybody tells you, including me.
and
2) There are lots of different ways to achieve the same positive results.("there's no single way things have to be done")

I like my added detail because it will reveal, over time, that a particular animal is eating regularly, but only overnight, or only on food items that are washed. I'd miss that with your method.

On the other hand, your methods would get 97% of the information communicated at a glance, and who knows what else I might accomplish with the little bit of time i'd save using a system simpler than my own. :)
