Dan:
Different folks do it in different ways and have good results, so I can only tell you what I would do.
First of all, make sure that you are getting good nighttime drops (58-65) or you are likely to get infertile eggs. Personally, my males have NEVER bitten the females.
Watch closely to see that the female is receptive. If she tirelessly tries to get away, take her out.
If she seems receptive and if you witness courtship…leave them together and watch for copulation. Mine have copulated for up to 12 hours straight or more, so you are not going to want to separtate them right away.
As long as he’s not being aggressive and she seems receptive, I’d leave them together until morning as check them. I’ve done this and had them STILL locked up in the morning.
When copulation seems to be over…separate them, feed them if they will eat, give them a few days…then do it again. I personally repeat this pattern until either the female is noticable gravid, or until she starts refusing the advances of the male…usually indicating the mission is accomplished.
Again…nightime drops in the upper 50s to mid 60’s and then daytime highs in the 80’s is what has worked for me.
Good luck !
