Both of my adults would be considered blacks. However there are always a few hatchlings that come out with significant red on the chin and throat. I don't know if this fades with age. As the urge to have Red in the chin and throat is a recent phenomenon, I've never made note of any changes in color.
I've never heard your definition of "phase" (or anybody elses definition for that matter). It's clear that if that is what a phase is, the herp community misuses the term "phase" a lot.
Either way, black or red, these critters are a blast.
