it was a big stout spirited jet black snake. They have the personality of pine snake, but I think they are cooler beasts.
The feel is like a rubber boa (not smooth like a kingsnake or indigo) but even more rubbery than Charina.
I can't really describe why, but it was one of the coolest snakes I have ever had (and everyone who saw it agreed). The only other specimens I have seen in person were DORs which were a uniform silvery gray, really interestingly colored snakes.
I think part of the mystique (at least for me) is their rarity in the pet trade. Apparently they used to be a very common pet snake in Europe, but in the US they never seem to have taken off.
