: They are magnificent serpents. I have often thought to scale back (no pun) on my non hots (I have two Ball Pyth's and two Burmese (one is green phase)). Since I have gotten into Vens, I have really desired no other non's. However, Everything I'm seeing and hearing about Drymarchon is really remarkable. I used to think they were just "trash" snakes, like I would say garters and certainly rat snakes are. (I would never neglect a "trash" snake If I owned one, mind you, it's just that some snakes are so common, I really don't see their appeal as captives.)

: Any Garter or Rat fans, please forgive my blasphemy!!!

: Indigos are CLEARLY not in that category, as I once assumed. For one, I had NO IDEA that they got so HUGE!!! Are they immune to crotalid venom?? If they eat young rattlers, I would think they would be, or else, very good at evading FANGS!!

: I would love to see some, in real life. I hear they are protected. IS that nationwide, or just in certain states?

: Lemme know!!

Greg B,
I will attempt to answer your questions as best that I humbly can. Certainly there are bigger breeders of Drymarchon than I( The venerable Chuclk Elliot comes to mind), and I don't have an overinflated sense of self,I assure you. Haveing said all that, I agree that Drymarchon are UNIQUE snakes, and to even class them with Garters(*UGH) or Hondurans is to do a HUGE disservice to them. A snbake as large and beautifull as an Eastern Indigo, for example, with the calm nature that they posess just can't be compared to some wiggling, hyperactive, cloaca everting gartersnake or milkjsnake. The downside is that they are very messy, but hey your going to have to clean cages for any snake that you get. I know I may have alienated those lovers of milksnakes and garters burmese, and to that end I say This is just MY opinion. My suggestion to you would be to get rid of the Burms. and balls. Additionally, I have WATCHED a Indigo EAT a Rattler and the Western Diamondback bit it several times., with no ill effect. These could have been"DRY" bites, mind you, but I didn't think so. The Rattler was NOT a juvenile, it was a 3 ft. adult!! As for their protection staus they are on Cites Appendix 2, which is Threatened. All Interstate transportaion/sales MUST be accompanied by a Federal permit(Easily secured as shown by Robert Seibs post below, Thanks Rob!!) I beleive that they arew illegal to capture in florida, and I beleive that is is illegal to 0wn or breed them in Florida. I am speaking soley about Drymarchon coaris couperi, the eastern indigo. As far as the Other indigos, often called the Cribos, sucj as the Unicolor, yellow tail, and the Melanarus, I don't think that their are any Federal restrictions on them. Check your local state laws on them. I must say though that I am a tad jealous of you, living in sunny California, all the venomous stuff is off limits to me, and haveing a family, those days are over for me anywas(sigh). Hope that I was able to help you in some small way.For more info on Easterns Indigos, go to Renegade Reptiles on Kingsnake and pull up my Indigo page(s). Best of luck and have a good Christmas.

Fred A.
