I personally (although it's not entirely necessary) like to provide them with a retreat area in both the warm and cool sides of the cage.

in the wild...they are typically in one of three stages when at rest:

1- in a nice cool dark place...many times underground
2- basking in the open
3- somewhere in between like in the shade under a palm frond above ground.

under ideal circumstances...they'd be able to choose from similar conditions.
