Do not get anything that is less than 3 megapixels. get one that has at least a 3x OPTICAL zoom. pay no attention to what the digital zoom rating is, as you will not ever want to use it.
another thing to look for is memory storage. most digital cameras use compact flash cards. a 128mb flash card will hold, at a rough estimate, maybe 100 high resolution photos (for a 3 mega pixel camera. 4 mega pixels will be larger photos, which means less photos stored on the card).
my camera uses an ibm 340mb microdrive. this 3 megapixel camera will hold about 255 high quality images. the downside to this is that it can eat up battery life (compared to a compact flash card) like an indigo snake can go through mice.
On the other hand, the microdrive is MUCH faster than compact flash.
CD's are another medium for photo storage. I cant tell you much one way or the other about them, but i would have to imagine them to be slower than either CF or microdrive storage. then again, CD's cost 30 cents!
another major consideration is how the camera is powered. some cameras use a propietary lithium battery or battery pack. lithium batteries are the optimum battery for digital cameras, but such cameras also have drawbacks.
one drawback being that, well, i personally love this little battery pack i use for my camera (which runs on 6 nickel metal hydride batteries). This battery pack is the size of a small pager and clips to your belt. the battery life is just crazy good, as i havent had to charge up my pack since january!
i'd recommend cameras that use nickel metal hydride batteries (at least as an option), since they have good battery life and can be quickly recharged (hundreds and hundreds of times).
There is a website that can answer every single question you might possibly think of concerning digital cameras, and they have EXTENSIVE and in depth reviews on tons of these things.
i dont know the site off the top of my head anymore, but i can get it for you in the next couple of days. it breaks down everything, and even includes sample photos taken from each camera that they review!
this all being said, i'd like to apologize to anyone in advance, for pissing them off for being too arrogant and condescending.
i certainly did not mean to insult anyone in this post, and i just wanted to help someone who was in the same boat i was before i made a decision on a camera.
finally, once you decide on a camera, check ebay. you can probably knock a couple of hundreds off of the price.
apologetically,
dave
