Fred:
thanks for your info...i'll forward it on!
NASA ecologists hope to learn as much as possible about the habitats, ranges, breeding activity as possible in order to ultimately determine
1- number of animals a given area can support.
2- stautus of exisiting populations
3- how the mortalities are occuring, ultimatley how to "fix" the declining population issues.
the goal is to create an "ideal habitat module"
that will be closely monitored. once this is complete, they may decide to find areas of sutible habitat in other parts of the range that either do not have Indigos anymore or very few...and mimic these modules, perhaps even relocating animals from thriving populations...or possibly even re-introducing captive hatched babies.
the project started i believe back in '95 (don't quote me on that) but they are being extremely thorough...it's pretty encouraging. unfortunaltly, the problem of them being intentionlly killed by humans is still a major problem...Indigos being so large and sometimes bold. (they get noticed...and therefore destroyed)
they are looking for the info on captive breeding activity right now knowing that the snakes in the wild aren't living under the same ideal conditions as our captives, but would like to have ideas as to what they can expect from the study animals ...best case scenerio.
thanks again.
