: Greetings fellow Indigo lovers. I've mentioned before on this forum that NASA has launcehed an effort on Kennedy Space center to aid Indigo populations in Florida. I converse regularly with the NASA Ecologist who leads the project. She has some questions she needs answers to right now, i've shared the info. from my personal experience (i've bred Easterns 3 times), but I need data from anyone who has bred Easterns!! Here are the questions:
: 1- What age, in your expereinces, do they breed for first time?
: 2- Do they breed every year?
: 3- typical clutch size?
: 4- largest clutch you've heard of (from reliable source)
: 5- percent of hatch rate?
: 6 sex ratio per clutch?
: obviosly, the captive data from well-taken care of animals will be somewhat different from wild snakes, but it gives them a start.
: Again, i've shared my data, but would like as much imput from you as possible!! All data will be realyed directly to NASA...and i'm trusted...so please only serious replies!! post replies here or email me at deanandchelle@cinci.rr.com
: Thanks!!
Dean,
Sure! i'd be glad to help you. First let me say that I am not the largest producer of Indigos in theU.S. That would be Mr. Chuck Elliot, the san Juan Snake Man. No, I've kept and/or bred these snakes for about the last 8 years. But I'll answer your questions to the best of my ability.
1) Minimum breeding age has a lot to do with body weight, size. I would say that 3 years is a minimum for succesfull breeding without eggbinding. Others have bred them at two, but I would not chance this.
2)Yes, they breed every year.
3)Typical clutch size is usually 9-11 eggs.
4) Twelve is the largest clutch of good Viable eggs that I have heard of, bot as I said I don't have the numbers that Chuck does so you might want to ask him.
5)I have had females give me 90 percent hatch rate one year, and the next year give me 10 percent hatch rate from the same female. I like to give them a year off for growth and rest if possible/
6)Most clutches that I've had have came out higher on the male end, typically one female for every two to or three males produced. 40%female and 60%male is ther norm.
so tell me , what steps are N.A.S.A. takeing in order to aid the Indigo in it's plight? Please post these her, I and others would no doubt be interested to know about their plans
Fred
