:
: I have never owned or bred wild caught black tails or unicolors (the “central american cribos) but I do have a group of 2.1 adult yellowtails that are imports. YT’s are all but unavailable as captive born…and I’m hoping to make that a thing of the past in the near future. (with a lot of luck)

: Anyway, of the 3 I have, here’s what I did:

: 1 – wormed them with flagyl and panacure
: 2- put them on cypress with very high humidity
: 3- blocked off the glass on the cage and gave them a good, tight hiding place
: 4- got them all started with f/thawed chicks.

: I have heard many (like Dan suggested) get started using live rat pups or fish, but mine never went for them. They LOVE birds though.

: All 3 are high strung animals. I have had one of the males for 1.5 years now, and he is still downright MEAN. They other pair has been in captivity for a about 9 months. The male is high strung but doesn’t bite, and the female, (I call her “Lady Evil”) pretty much wants to kill me. Seriously. I think she’d just kill me and eat me if she could. It’s like she just knows I took her away from her jungle home and just hates my guts. I really don’t like getting imports…but there simply are no cb. Yt’s available. I’ve been trying to find them for over 2years.

: All are now taking f/t rats, but it took some time to accomplish this. They now all look very good…the first male is getting real big and thick now…and I think the Lady Evil will be ready to attempt breeding this coming fall. I’m relatively sure the cb babies will be calm, time will tell. I have a lot to learn in the next few months before trying to succeed at this feat…but am determined.

: I have a feeling, having seen a lot of w/c blacktails and unicolors, that they are calmer in general than yellowtails. I have seen people handling some big wc adults that seem calm…but then my yt’s didn’t really get mean until AFTER they were caged for a while.

: Good Luck,

: Dean Alessandrini

same deal here dean.....exactly. all my cribos are angels except the yt's. and my biggest female acts exactly like you described yours to act. she always goes for my face too. i have a smaller female though that will accept food out of my hand. but the prior dicussion concerned 'central americans' meaning uni's, black-tails and intergrades or what i call brown tails. my experience w/ them has been that they are trustworthy straight out of the jungle. i've never seen one bite.....ever. all my adults are housed in 8' x 2' cages that i built and i've never even seen them try to get out in all the years they've been in them!!! i believe this is because they don't feel boxed in. all my wc uni's now eat from my hand and breed every year like clockwork. they are simply just wonderful snakes in my opinion. i i started keeping snakes as pets in '57 and now have a very large and diverse collection and have seen quite a lot thru the decades but as far as wc snakes go......cribos are among the best there are for stability, intelligence, interaction w/ their keepers and also as impressive display animals. good luck next year dean w/ your yt's. i'm hoping to produce them as well. judging from ths young female i have, i do believe the offspring will be better behaved than their parents.
