I have never owned or bred wild caught black tails or unicolors (the “central american cribos) but I do have a group of 2.1 adult yellowtails that are imports. YT’s are all but unavailable as captive born…and I’m hoping to make that a thing of the past in the near future. (with a lot of luck)
Anyway, of the 3 I have, here’s what I did:
1 – wormed them with flagyl and panacure
2- put them on cypress with very high humidity
3- blocked off the glass on the cage and gave them a good, tight hiding place
4- got them all started with f/thawed chicks.
I have heard many (like Dan suggested) get started using live rat pups or fish, but mine never went for them. They LOVE birds though.
All 3 are high strung animals. I have had one of the males for 1.5 years now, and he is still downright MEAN. They other pair has been in captivity for a about 9 months. The male is high strung but doesn’t bite, and the female, (I call her “Lady Evil”) pretty much wants to kill me. Seriously. I think she’d just kill me and eat me if she could. It’s like she just knows I took her away from her jungle home and just hates my guts. I really don’t like getting imports…but there simply are no cb. Yt’s available. I’ve been trying to find them for over 2years.
All are now taking f/t rats, but it took some time to accomplish this. They now all look very good…the first male is getting real big and thick now…and I think the Lady Evil will be ready to attempt breeding this coming fall. I’m relatively sure the cb babies will be calm, time will tell. I have a lot to learn in the next few months before trying to succeed at this feat…but am determined.
I have a feeling, having seen a lot of w/c blacktails and unicolors, that they are calmer in general than yellowtails. I have seen people handling some big wc adults that seem calm…but then my yt’s didn’t really get mean until AFTER they were caged for a while.
Good Luck,
Dean Alessandrini
