I also have used a larger rubbermaid, slide-in style cage before for... come to think of it, I can't even remember what was in it...BECAUSE I NEVER SAW IT. Those large rubbermaid cages are now in my closet where I house my pants, shirts and socks, no lie. For that function, they are awesome.
Like I said earlier, I do have some Rubber Boas that probably do better in the more secure confines that their opaque boxes provide. But I, on the other hand, hate the fact that there is nothing to enjoy about them but the fact that I can let little kids hold them. As soon as I can, I'll either give them to friends or sell them off. Then I can use that slide-in cage for something useful, like storage for microscopes and slides and other tools of the trade.
You're right Fred, snakes are not trading cards or comic books to be stored away in drawers.
: I have used Rubbermaids for Drymarchon, primarily those HUGE TUBS(Dont know the size) because they were easily cleaned. Thats the ONLY good reason in my opinion. They can be taken outside and hosed off and sterilized. Try that with a large 6 ft Vision cage a couple of times and you wont do it again. Lightweight plastic, sheesh!
: But I think the real reason that you see people keeping expensive snakes in them is simply this: GREED. You can slam more snakes in a smaller amount of space, increase your productivity and pay pennies for individual cageing. The snakes become something akin to baseball cards, all neatly kept in index boxes, with little regard to the LIVING ANIMALS natural behaviour. Just another snake out of a large bunch of snakes.
: Also racks/plastic boxes allow people to buy snakes without any foresite or planning whatsoever as to the snakes NEEDs. They all get treated pretty much the same, from species that are arboreal(yes I have seen it) to species that cover large tracts of land dureing the course of a day(Indigos) they all get a sweater box with shaveings and a waterbowl. Itsa shame that people that can afford to dont slow down and smell the roses and see and appreciate their animals.
