It seems we are a different breed, doesn't it?
You know all of us in the herp hobby got in it at first because we LOVED the animals. Maybe you (like me) caught garter snakes in your yard as a kid, thought they were sooo cool...and couldn't understand why mom and everyone else freaked out when you caught them and brought them in the house and smelled like musk all day!
It was a pure love of nature's creatures. But I have seen so many people who used to love the animals get to the point that all they see when they look at a herp is a dollar sign.
People selling w/c box turtles and water snakes for 5 bucks. I know of guys who go to Kansas and return with 150 central plains milks. or go to SC and RAPE...come back with 20 or more scarlet kings...etc...most of them end up dying. All for the almight dollar.
it MAKES ME SICK.
I do make money from selling cb snakes...but I still get excited when I see a garter snake or a black rat or a box turtle. Because I love the animals...not because I want to SELL THEM!
One day after diving into a pile of rocks to catch a black racer (which I released of course) I actually had a guy say to me "why would you do something like that and get yourself all tore up over a $5 snake?"
No snake is a $5 snake. they are living, breathing creatures that deserve to be treated humanely...and not boxed up and forgotten about with no stumulus whatsoever in their lives.
