Sex determination in snakes is chromosomal, just as it is in humans. Snakes that are homogametic (ZZ) will be male, snakes that are heterogametic (ZW) will be female. I remember this from a graduate genetics class a few years back, and from working with turtles.
Most turtles, Crocodilians and some lizards have non-chromosomal sex determination, but it is the exception, not the rule.
