The 2 years I bred my pair of black tails was as uncomplicated as you can possibly imagine. They were kept year round at around 78 to 82F, and would mate mainly early in the year, usually Jan, as they wouldn't seem interested before that time of year. They were exposed to the regional photoperiod through a small window. My only female both times laid about a dozen eggs, which are noticeably smaller than Eastern eggs. Not once did she lay a single slug, and all eggs always hatched perfectly at a mean temp of 80-82F. Can't remember the incubation time though.
An additional note of interest on the B/T: I kept a female in the past that without ever being mated while in my care wound up laying two fertile eggs along with a couple of slugs a full three years after I acquired it. So they can retain sperm for quite a while as well, it seems!
So it's safe to say melanurus/unicolor are quite a bit more heat tolerant than their eastern counterparts.
