: To my knowledge, cypress mulch is not available on the west coast. Otherwise we would all be using it, especially for breeding Boas and Pythons in the winter because it raises humidity.
: Most of us use shavings. Pine shavings and screened shavings have worked well for me. Screened shavings can be dessicating, but they are especially easy to keep clean for yearlings and above. Screened shavings clump well when the animal defecates.
: Neonates may do better on pine shavings which can be moistened more easily on the hot spot.

Craig,
I use newspaper on the adults, paper towel on the neonates. I am BIG on stripping everything out of the cage and cleaning it all. This makes me a slave to the animals needs, this is true, but my cages are clean. Cypress has also worked well with me, but the cost is rather prohibitive. When I was useing shaveings I got them locally from a fellow breeder who brought them in from Calexico, pre screened and VERy fine white pine shaveings.
But now I just use newspaper on the adults, very thick layers of it on the bottem of their cage, and paper towels on any indigo that is neonate to 1 1/2 yrs old. As I said, not the easiest road to go down, and not the most eye catching, but one that works for me,as I hate dirty cages and dont "SPOT CLEAN" anything.
