To my knowledge, cypress mulch is not available on the west coast. Otherwise we would all be using it, especially for breeding Boas and Pythons in the winter because it raises humidity.
Most of us use shavings. Pine shavings and screened shavings have worked well for me. Screened shavings can be dessicating, but they are especially easy to keep clean for yearlings and above. Screened shavings clump well when the animal defecates.
Neonates may do better on pine shavings which can be moistened more easily on the hot spot.
