: I use an under, outside the cage heating pad but it seems the snakes do not always find it or lay on it especially with the position of the hide box-seems like they move the box away from it- Any hints also to the positioning of overhead light source , positioning of thermom and optimum temps - My vet says 90 degrees for S TX Indigoes - I am a little confused on this- The vet says that they regurge lunch if not at least this temp- Dean and Fred, comments? thanks a lot.
Digomania,
90 degrees is WAY to hot for the hot spot of the cage. Temps like that cause regurge. If you dont beleive me, leave your indigos in a room that gets up to 90 degrees ambient air temp dureing the day all day, and give it some plump juicy rats....thats right...you get regurge.
I use overhead heat sources, but prefer undertank heaters, as they heat better. Wghen useing over head heat sources, I put the hide box on the side that DOESNT have the heat. Indigos need a temp gradient, as Dean said, with the cool side being somewhere around 70 degrees. The warm side can be 82 and thats plenty hot, even lower would be better. These snakes go into gopher tortiese burows dureing the day, and come out as they wish.
Also provide enough cover for them to bury in, whether that be sani chips, aspen, pine or newspaper. Females seem much more inscure in this arena than males. Well hope this helped.
Fred
P.S.
Switch vets.
