In Reply to: Flagyl (metronidazole) Toxicity in Indigos???? posted by Carl on January 19, 2002 at 12:43:31:
Back in the day when I used to be heavily into chameleons, I'd routinely deparasitize my freshly imported animals, and on occasion, i'd treat my own captive bred stock.
i would use recommended protocols and stick to them religiously (I am fred-like about such things, following directions).
well, i cannot tell you how many nervous systems i destroyed and/or chameleons i killed. after so many of these animals crashing, i swore off the stuff.
what really pisses me off is what i did to a few of my favorite captive bred pets that i bred and hatched out myself.
They lost the ability to use their tongues at a range of more than an inch or two. when they walked, they had this really sickening sway to their walk. also, two of my females, when they walked, ALWAYS crossed their front legs, like they were retarded or something.
now, this stuff didnt happen to every single animal i dosed, but it happened to enough of them to warrant risking long term parasite infestation. once i stopped medicating with this evil drug, my chameleon life expectency went way up, and my chameleon sudden death syndrome that is commonly experienced by people virtually disappeared.
as some famous person in colorado once said, "drugs are bad, mkay"
which reminds me. how come wild caught animals usually get along fine in the wild with parasites always inside of them? yeah, i know, stress in captivity weakens them, etc, etc..
: Looking for more info about the toxicity of Flagyl in Indigos...I've only found one source (Vol 3 Ackerman...Reptile Husbandry...) that says use a reduced dosage for them, but nothing about the why's whens, or what toxic effects are seen...This is such a commonly used drug in herps (and people in whom toxicity is seen when imbibing alcohol when the antibiotic is in their system, It's actually staring to replace antabuse for treating alcoholics)
: I want more details about this drug reaction (with references)...This is a great antibiotic for many intestinal diseases, bacterial and protozoan, commonly prescribed and recommended for other snakes, lizards, turles, etc....So pony up the info guys!!!
