African Mole Snakes: I have a lone female. That doesn't mean I know much though. Half of what I know is in the first sentence.
They are common in the wild but extremely rare in collections. I know there are a couple more here in the US, but none have come up for sale. My female is pretty young so hopefully I have 5-10 years to find a mate.
I've managed to not kill her, but I came close. I think what I learned from almost killing her was that they don't need cooling.
They are from Southern Africa, their colors vary a lot from place to place, they tame down just fine but not as well as indigos. I think they are best described as Africa's Pituophis. They'll eat anything, including eggs (not for me yet). They are powerful constrictors. They are VERY vocal. Mine has a louder hiss than the indigos.
They have the worst bite of any non-venomous snake (that isn't a giant). I've read of children losing fingers to them. The guy I bought mine from was in a cast for a week from a bite from her. He's a reptile dealer and has been bitten hundreds of times. That was his worst bite.
You know how when people ask about how to get a snake to stop biting and we say, let the snake bite you and don't put it down so the snake learns that biting you doesn't help...
That plan doesn't work with these guys. Don't get bit, at least by an adult.
Mine is pretty much tame but I always use a snake stick to take her out. She's never trouble once out. If she's fiesty in her cage, I leave her alone.
I'm looking for a male btw.
