I know most of you must know this trick, but no one has mentioned it...
Additional suggestion...I use a piece of tape to roll over the retained eyecap...It will adhere to the cap and takes it off without ANY external manipulation with instruments...Beleive me guys, you want to be extremely cautious using any instruments, as one of our previous respondents noted...I just got my Tx male back from the vet after 3+ months of treatment for an infection I induced using forceps to remove an eyecap...Guys, it cost me $2000, that's right $2K..He is blind in 1 eye but the other is ok and he's doing well eating great again...Do everything you can to avoid instrumentation..I use a commercial product called shed ease and soak them everyday for several days prior to shedding..I also use Lacrilube, an eye lubricating ointment you can find at any pharmacy....I apply it daily until shed is accomplished and sucessful...Some of you probably think I'm crazy for spending that kind of $$, but I could not bring myself to tell the vet to put him down as I would have if it was a dog...My vet (Kevin Fitzgerald in Aurora, Co) is a great guy and the best herp vet in the state...He just kept telling me not to give up and what a great snake "Bubba" was(What else would you call a 7 ft plus Texas Indigo??)...All the staff at the Hospital knew him and handled him and cheered when we picked him up...They all want to see him back for a visit...Now I hope he will have a sucessful breeding this yr with his female counterpart...Hopefully I can recoup my $, but, even if I don't, I have not a single regret..These animals are treasures....Happy Holidays to All..CG
: Hi Guys;
: My male eastern 'Tango' just went through a shed which came off in pieces as opposed to the usual intact shed. Had him out playing with him tonight for awhile & noticed a white thing hanging out of his eye. Guess where it shows up so good against a black snake I friggin near freaked, they don't look nearly as bad on a Corn.
: Anyway I moisted my thumb, sorta rubbed around his eye a little till a small shed of skin came out then I veeeeeeerrrry carefully removed it, it came off like a contact lens. My question is ; Is this common in Indigos? Did I do the right thing removing it as opposed to letting it come off on it's own? And ;How can I prevent this type of shed from happening again??
: As a lot of you know I'm fairly new to Indigos so bear with all my questions ;-) I LOVE this breed of snake I can understand why people are so excited when they get one.
: I also learned tonight you should not feed your Koi while sporting an Indigo around your neck, I didn't realize it until Tango lunged after my 12 inch Koi when he surfaced to feed & almost caught it too. Won't be letting THAT happen again. LOL
: These guys keep you on your toes I tell ya.
: Anyway any comments on the eyecap issue are more than welcome.
: Thanx
: Dean
