: Besides, this late most baby easterns have been sold and you'd have to buy adults. It's more fun watching them grow, and learning how to work with them when they are small helps too.

In the state of South Carolina you can own an elephant if you have the proper permits. I've spoken with alot of local herpers and they've all said that its totally legal to keep Easterns as long as you have the proper permit if you transport them across state lines. I do realize that its pretty late in the year and that the chance of getting a hatchling is slim, but I dont mind. If I have to wait till next year then thats fine with me.
