: It is one of those good news, bad news successes. This is my first go at breeding eastern indigos and I appreciate all of the excellent advice I received on this forum. Of course, after what seemed like many months of incubation and constant worrying over the eggs, the eggs hatched. Unfortunately, only two of the five seemingly viable eggs hatched leaving me to wonder if I did something wrong. As fate would have it, the eggs hatched while I was leading a group of kids on a field herpetology trip and upon my return, two beautiful babies had already hatched. I manually pipped the other three eggs only to find fully formed neonates but no movement. I waited until the following morning and they were definitely dead. Seeing how rough the eggs are in texture I can imagine what a struggle it would be for the baby snakes, however, i also wonder if there was anything I could have done differently. Any thoughts? I am going to make a few changes next year to better my chances but any additional advice would be welcome. Thanks in advance!
Rob,
I would change your incubation techniques and invest in a good incubator with excellent airflow.(Assumeing you dont have one) Additionally,when the first one slit its egg, I would wait 3 hours and then slit ALL of them. You are right Rob, those eggs are tough and leathery, slit them and ley the captives free. Best of luck next year!
