About 3 months ago, I switched from newspaper to cypress mulch, and I have to say, I prefer it.
it helps keep humidity up, hides smell (to some extent) and in my opinion is easier to clean.
I take the snakes out of the cages and feed them in plastic sweater boxes to prevent ingestion.
as far as cleaning, I spot clean (simply remove the area of the much that is soiled) every day, and totally clean out the cage and replace the mulch weekly.
Having the mulch also keeps the feces from smearing all over the cage.
The snakes seem to like it too. it creates a little more natural smell comfort level, in my opinion. I have a w/c yellow tail that would not eat on paper, but is doing fine with high humidity on cypress.
I plan to go back to paper during breeding season, as I don't want to take the chance of debris sticking to the organs...etc.
