: I was traveling through Milwaukee from Iowa (with my 6 foot indigo)and stayed at a local motel, with the indigo in a 20 gallon (on the closet floor) for the night and next day.
: The night was uneventful but the next day, when I returned to my room at about 2 pm to pack I turned the corner to find a vacuum cleaner running in my room, the closet door open and the cage open. The indigo was on the top shelf of the closet coiled up.
: When I went down to the front desk to return the vacuum cleaner and to inquire, the guy at the desk said that one of the maids had just left the building, running, and that she seemed very upset.
: "Hunh... isn't that somethin'," I said, as I slithered back upstairs
: Indigos are so impressive even when you know them and see them every day - I am always amazed by them. Imagine what it would be like to see one of these big boys if you're NOT a snake enthusiast... truly horrifying, I imagine!
Funny but sad....
Years ago, when I had just one pair of Eastern indigos(But a LOT of other snakes, mostly boas) I was blessed to have the female Indigo become GRAVID.
This was the first time I had bred them, so it was a big deal to me indeed. The female wasa swollen with eggs, and she was kept in a 4 ft Vision cage.
The male"Cadillac" was kept in a 4 ft Vision cage directly above hers.
I had a friend come over while I was cleaning. We talked shop and I resumed cleaning my Indigos. For some obscure reason, I cleaned the females cage last.
Shortly after cleaning the cages, my friend and I got into a conversation about something..and it eventually came back to snakes and especially the gravid female indigo.
We glanced over to her cage, only to see the front door slid halfway open, and NO snake in it!!
I panicked, as the Apartment complex I lived in was situated right next to a canyon of immense size, and i always leave the front door open when I clean(Used to!)
So , we closed the door, and we RIPPED the house apart looking for this snake
We tore apart furniture, looked under the fridge,, EVERYWHERE..twice!!
So, exhausted..we gave up!! Boy, was i bummed. Then we opend the door, looked outside art the heavily planted apartment complex and at the big canyon..and groaned!!
She could be anywhere! And she was due to lay soon!!
so we combed through the bushes, trees, ICEPLANT(LOT OF IT) and still came up empty.
So then we sat down, drank a beer, and got bummed.
About 5 hours later, I went outside..looked about 8 ft from the door and saw this big branch. Wondered what it was doing ther(I do not have the best vision)
Well the branch moved, and it came into the house, went BACK up towards the cage, and went back into the cage(Door was still open)
So my GRAVID, 1st time breeding Eastern indigo female had returned!!
Needless to say i locked the cage..and closed the door after that . She produced 12 good eggs that year. Boy, was I lucky, God must have been looking out for me.
