I've been lucky enough never to have had an indigo escape (although many other have)
but it's neat to hear that. I really kind of makes sense. In the wild their they take up shelter in a burrow and that kind of becomes their "home" at least for long periods it does. So...it seems your snake saw his cage not as a cage, but as his burrow. He had had his roaming, probably didn't find too much interesting, and decided it was time to return to the security of his "burrow"
