I think the laws are a good idea. (BTW - this same issue applies to TX indigos here in TX as well.)
The issue for the regulatory agency is to try and protect the snake from exploitation. The best way to do this is to prohibit possession of the species. That way there are no questions, if someone is in possession, they are violating the law.
They do make exceptions for scientific research and recognized institutions whose goal is to protect and potentially increase the populations of wild snakes, but I don't think the state should make exceptions to these laws for people's individual gratification (as pets) or personal financial benefit (as breeding stock).
All the scientific evidence I have seen suggest that Eastern Indigos are in grave danger of extinction. I think those of us that admire the species/ssp would want to do what we can to ensure its survival. If that means FL residents can't possess them, I can accept that. I can't keep TX indigos, but I can live without one if it will help ensure they will still be around in 20 years.
