poaching would, and do so, with out the permits. Why would one apply for a permit in Florida and then become known to the officials? In having permits in Flordia, in which I do, you are granting the Fish and Wildlife Commision, permission to inspect at any time. That is one of the conditions of the permits. Many try to justify this silly regulation of not granting permits with the argument that it is really "protecting" the indigos. The Florida Game Commission makes no bones about why they do not give permits. They do not have the man power nor the time to enforce and keep tabs on them. It has nothing to do with "protecting" the snakes. Naturally, many breeders, espcically those in other states, would love to keep Florida residents from keeping and breeding indigos. As you stated Fred, greed is sometimes the driving force behind peoples action, and as long as indigos going for $400 to $500 dollars, you are going to have poaching. Indigos are not that uncommon that poachers have a hard time finding them. Ask Dean, he was just down here on a study! Unlike gray banded kings and corn snakes, indigos, as you know, have a different problem, because of the high cost of breeding and raising them, they will always be a higher priced animal and captive breeding will probably never meet the demands of the pet trade. I don't think that punishing people who trully love these animals (such as yourself) should be denied permits because of unscrupulous people who are going to find a way to make a buck, regardless of the law. People who will take the time and effort to fill out the paper work and invest the money and energy to care for these animals, are most likely not going to be the poachers! While I can sympathize with the work load of the Game and Fish Commission, I do not think that they should refuse permits to qualified people just to make their jobs easier! A much higher logic needs to be applied. I personally think that they ought to issue the permits, and if one is caught "poaching" then prosecute to the fullest extent of the law. It is of my opinion, that by issuing these permits it would decrease illegal poaching, not increase it!!!
