: I just picked up a pair of wc Blacktailed Cribos yesturday. I have been looking into getting Drymarchon for a couple of months and have been reading this forum and gandering at Indigosnakes.com since Christmas.
: Well I took the plunge and now have (two) three foot Blacktailed Cribos. I have them in a 55 gallon for now, but will probably build them a custom cage this summer.
: My biggest worry is that they will not eat, as the person who sold them to me said he did not have them long enough to guarantee feeding. I am soooooo dieing to put a rat in there, put don't want to stress them by offering food too soon. If they are reluctant, I will look for tips ahead of time. Got any? Any advice for a new Drymarchon fan?
: I have been keeping Lampropeltis, Elaphe, and Pituophis for years. I am prepared for a higher food intake (and output.) Any other differences I should know that I might not have found out? I could write a book of questions, so I'll leave it at that and say fire away! -Heather
Heather,
First off, I would recommend houseing the snakes seperately. Feed them seperately. Since you opted to buy wild caught snakes, make sure you keep them away from the other snakes in your collection, to avoid cross contamination.
I would take both of them to a qualified reptile vet and get a fecal float and fecal culture done on BOTH. You can bet that they more than likely are loaded down with endoparasites, and maybe mites also. Get the fecal anaylisis done, treat any parasites present, and then feed them small meals at first. Small mice, hopper, pinkies.
Drymarchon are not big fans of overly high temps, so keep the temps in the 72-75 range in the cage, Also make sure you provide a hide box for each snake , as well as a waterbowl.
If you have any other questions, make a list and e-mail me at FA19@excite.com, I'll be glad to answer them. Get the fecal, you'll be glad you did.
Fred
