: I'll try to answer your questions as best I can.
: 1- They poop more than pits (although not much)It has a similar runny consistancy.
: 2-Largest subspecies is Drymarchon corais corais, the yellow-tail cribo, which can attain lengths in excess of 10'
: 3-In my experience, they don't grow nearly as fast as Pits, you can expect 2 years at least for them to hit the 6' mark. Of couse Virgils friend has that melanurus thats 3 years old and 8' so...
: some may grow faster.
: 4-I've only bred Eastern Indigos so far...and they are not hard to get to breed, but it's a crap shoot as to whether you get fertile eggs. I've heard most of the cribos are somewhat easier to breed, although it would be very difficult to say because very few people do it with any regularity.
: 5-By fidgety, I assume you mean that they are always on the move when being handled? If that's the question, the answer is yes !
: Hope this helps, I'm a pit fan too, and love all the large colubrids. Trust me, these guys are the kings!
YinYam,
Pituophis are one of my favorite snakes. Haveing kept and bred Eastern Indigos for the last 9 years or so, I also favor them heavily. Deans answers seem on target, but allow me to inject some of my own opinion into this question &answer session.
(1) Indigos poop more often than Pits and their stools are looser and runnier. And more foul smelling.
(2) I have heard that they yellow tailed is the largest. But not many come into this country and only a small group of breeders work with them. I have had and seen EASTERNs that were 9 ft+
(3) In My observation, fed to excess, Indigos grow much more rapidly than Pits, cycle their food faster and eat more. feeding them this heavy to get growth of this type is not good for them.
(4) I brred them and have done so for quite a while.
A high infertility rate in easterns , coupled with dead in egg for some breeders basically insures that not a lot of people produce them successfully or consistently unless they have large numbers that make up for the deficit that they expereince when one of the above happens.

P.S.
