: : hi! i've got a pair of melanurus that i've just started to lower the temperature on and i was just wondering what temperatures you guys would recommend i lower them to and for how long? thanks in advance.
:
: Although I find melanuras to not like a very high temp (I keep my 7' male at about 75F)
: they don't hibernate, they come from central and south america and its too warm for
: them to hibernate. As far as breeding (no experience on my part) there is, I believe, a
: slight cooling period to get them to breed. I have heard of some north american colubrids
: being hibernated in refrigerators during the winter months, but I can't imagine why one
: would want to, however, in the wild hibernating herps live longer, I guess because if they
: are safe in a den asleep, there is less chance of them being killed by predators, and the
: metabolism slows down perhaps leading to a physiological advantage over the aging
: process. A melanuras would probably die if dropped to temps that an eastern or texas
: could survive.
: Hope to be of any help and I'm not an expert,
: Roy
thanks roy
someone once told me that they had to be dropped to about 55f for about 8 weeks, any opinion as to whether thats too low? last year i only lowered them a little amount and i got lots of copulation but no eggs, this year though i have been feeding them heavier and supplementing their food with extra multi-vitamins to see if that helps.
thanks again
peter
